The Force Awakens. Home Release. SXSW
With SXSW approaching at warp speed, Disney's Home Entertainment division needed a big idea to make a splash of galactic proportions at the Austin festival. I pitched a recreation of the Cantina featured in the original Star Wars: A New Hope movie, complete with staff dressed in costume, the alien orchestra playing the soundtrack, Stormtroopers roaming the joint, cosplay contests with guests, etc. Disney loved the idea of a pop-up Cantina but felt they couldn't pull if off in 2 months; however, they promised to keep the stunt in their Jedi minds for another time. Turns out it was the stunt they were looking for. Less than a year later, the Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the movie's iconic set serving as a pop-up joint in LA in 2017, the Scum & Villainy Cantina. I'm flattered, really, but if I see Greedo on the premises, I'm going to shoot first and ask George Lucas later.
